Starting June 1, 2016, Arlington County will post responses to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests online. The purpose of posting FOIA responses is to promote increased awareness and transparency of government activities and afford residents and businesses an opportunity to witness the operations of government. This aligns with Arlington County Open Government goals. The overarching goal is to increase government transparency.
Online FOIA posting will be limited to Arlington County government documents requested via FOIA. The individual requests are not posted, as they often contain personal identifying information. Though it may be legal to post the requests, we are choosing to post only the response documents. Personal identifying information of residents and 911 phone call transcripts will likewise not be posted online. This is an administrative policy intended to protect the privacy of residents and businesses. Individuals making FOIA requests will continue to receive all records allowable by law.
Standard FOIA exemptions apply. Arlington County will not post protected health information of residents, personnel records, proprietary business information or other such documents that are exempt from FOIA and cannot be legally posted online. In accordance with General Schedule GS-19, responses are retained for three years.
